British Grand Prix preview – Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes struggle as the British Grand Prix sprinkles Hollywood
By Kieran Jackson at Silverstone
On a Silverstone weekend where the presence of Brad Pitt and the Apple Studios crew is the talk of the town, the executive producer of the as-yet untitled Formula 1 film – the sport’s own A-lister – struggled in his spiritual life on Friday. At home.
Lewis Hamilton remains without a win in 19 months since Saudi Arabia entered the penultimate round of the 2021 season. Last year, at a thrilling British Grand Prix won by Carlos Sainz, the eight-time winner came close, but the 38-year-old remains at an unprecedented winless streak.
This weekend, despite Mercedes bringing an upgraded front wing, the practice pace was simply not there for Hamilton or his teammate George Russell. Both drivers finished outside the top 10 in both sessions.

British Grand Prix: 20 years since the Irish ‘crazy’ invaded the Silverstone circuit
Exclusively from Kieran Jackson
“Oh my god, me!” shouted ITV’s chief Formula 1 commentator James Allen, words that struggled to capture the sheer madness of what was being witnessed. “We’ve got a madman on the track!”
When a group of Just Stop Oil protesters invaded the circuit during the opening round of the British Grand Prix last year, it was not Silverstone’s first confrontation with track invaders. Twenty years ago, however, the 2003 British Grand Prix lasted 10 laps before mad Irish priest Neil Horan sprinted up the blazingly fast Hangar Straight.
Many drivers had to swerve to avoid him when Horan, dressed in a brown kilt, frantically ran into the racing line of F1 cars traveling at 200 mph while waving banners reading “Read the Bible” and “The Bible has always directly.”
