The NASCAR Cup Series returns to road racing at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday.
Recent Cup Series road races have revolved around Tyler Reddick, Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson, with AJ Allmendinger always able to win while turning left and right. Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. have also had some strong results lately at Sonoma, with Busch posting his third win of the season at Gateway this past weekend. A fourth win would tie Busch’s combined winning total from his last three seasons with Joe Gibbs Racing.
Elliott is back in the No. 9 car after serving a one-race suspension for deliberately vandalizing Denny Hamlin at Charlotte. He is still eligible for the playoffs, but will almost certainly need to win to make the playoffs. Elliott has led laps and competed in the last three Sonoma races, but he has never won at the California track.
Noah Gragson will miss Sunday’s race, Legacy Motor Club announced earlier this week, with concussion-like symptoms following a hard crash at Gateway last Sunday. Truck Series veteran Grant Enfinger will race the No. 42 Chevrolet.
After Sonoma, the series will get a weekend off for the June 25 race at Nashville Superspeedway and a shift in TV affiliates from FOX to NBC.
